Literature Text

The week had passed by agonizingly slowly, but it was finally, finally Friday.

The plans were all in place: after practice you and Tanaka were going to get porkbuns at the Foothill convenience store and then head back to his house for a movie marathon.

It sounded like the perfect date.

But neither of you dared to call it a date.

Even though it was pretty clear that the feelings were mutual, both you and Tanaka tiptoed around the word when you made plans, like the awkward teenagers that you were. Neither of you had any experience in the dating world, so every precaution was taken from both sides not to screw anything up.

You found yourself doing everything in your power to ensure that your plans worked out perfectly. That morning you took extra time to style your hair just right, and even packed an extra outfit for after school, so that you could change out of your uniform before meeting up with Tanaka.

There was no way that you would screw it up with Tanaka.

But things outside of your control might.

After your final class of the day you skipped off to the bathroom with an unusual pep in your step. Volleyball practice had already started, but you still had plenty of time to get ready before meeting up with the boy. As you stepped across the door’s threshold you heard a voice urgently calling you from the hallway, and you craned your neck to see a familiar upperclassman hurriedly making her way toward you.

“(F/n)! Thank God I found you!”

You smiled at the girl, one of your senpais in the tutoring program. You were about to offer a greeting, but were quickly cut off,

“There was a mix up in the schedule for the week, and we need you to cover in the library today.”

“Actually I—“

But the girl was already retreating from the conversation. She turned the corner, yelling a casual “thanks” over her shoulder.

You sighed, dropping your gaze to stare at the ground. There was really no way that you could have said no, even if your senpai had stayed long enough for you to offer an objection. Reluctantly, you dragged yourself to the library.

“Tanaka-senpai! Are you excited for your date later?”

The boy snapped his head around to offer Hinata an incredulous look.

“Who told you about that?”

A mischievous grin worked its way onto the younger boy’s features, “(F/n)-senpai told me about it yesterday.”

“Did she tell you anything?”

“She said that she was excited to see you, but then she got embarrassed and wouldn’t talk about it anymore.”

The boy didn’t even notice Kageyama creeping up behind him like an angry shadow, ready to slap him on the back of his head, “Dumbass! Obviously she didn’t want to talk to you about her relationship with Tanaka!”

Hinata whined, rubbing the back of his head, “that hurt, Kageyama-kun.”

“Shut up.”

Tanaka chuckled at the young boys as he made his way to the bench. He sifted through the water bottles and towels to find his cell phone, buried under a small mountain of practice gear.

The phrase “2 UNREAD MESSAGES” flashed on the screen. He must have missed them during practice. Unlocking his phone, he found his heart skipping a beat when he saw your name accompanying the texts. Unfortunately, the messages didn’t bear great news.

From: (F/n)
Tanaka, I’m really really really really sorry but I just found out that I have to tutor today. I don’t think I have time to hang out.

From: (F/n)
I’m sorry for the late notice

His butterflies quickly subsided upon reading the messages.

But there was no way that he’d give up quite so easily.

You spun your pencil around your fingers, watching the minutes tick by slowly on the clock. No one had come in for tutoring. Why would they? It was a Friday. Who comes in for tutoring on a Friday?

The fact that you had to forgo porkbuns and movies with Tanaka to sit in the library  was absolutely infuriating.

But what really worried you was the fact that the boy hadn’t texted you back yet. I mean, practice only ended about ten minutes ago, so it was possible that he hadn’t read the texts yet.

But your mind didn’t work like that; the worst case scenario had to be believed until disproven. Tanaka was probably angry. He probably thought that you were blowing him off, that you planned on not hanging out all along.

If only he could know that the opposite was true.

You let out an exasperated moan and hit your head on the study table. Perhaps if you just stayed like that, with your head flat on the desk, all of the negative thoughts would desert your mind.

“(F/n)?”

You jerked your head up from the desk to find none other than Tanaka himself, holding a grocery bag in one hand, and regarding your form with a nervous look on his face.

“Tanaka! I didn’t hear you come in,” you stuttered, trying to fix your disheveled hair. You continued, apprehension threading into your words, “did you get my text?”

The boy casually walked across the library and placed the bag on your table.

“Yep, that’s why I came.”

You examined him carefully, still confused by his calm presence. He didn’t seem angry at all. In fact, he almost appeared to have an air of confidence as he methodically unpacked the contents of the bag. As the items were placed on the table you slowly began to understand his motives. First came the sodas, then the chips, and finally, several steaming hot porkbuns. A huge smile appeared on your face as you spoke.

“I can’t believe you did all of this! How did you keep the porkbuns so warm?”

The boy sheepishly scratched the back of his head, “It’s no biggy, the store is a quick run down the road from here…”

Happiness had completely overtaken you at this point, “But the school is uphill! You ran up the hill?” You looked at the table in front of you in awe “This is one of the nicest things that anyone has ever done for me.”

It’s true, the boy’s simple gesture had completely melted your heart. He was an angel. A tall, awkward angel with a shaved head. The kind that made you laugh by sending you cheesy jokes via random text, and didn’t mind your own awkwardness.

Quietly, you raised your eyes to meet his, “thank you so much.”

Before he could stop himself, a quiet “anything for you” escaped from his lips.

A smile tugged on your lips and a blush lit your cheeks as his response sunk in.

The meal was amazing, mostly because it was spent with Tanaka. Unsurprisingly, you weren’t interrupted by anyone looking for tutoring, but the two of you were eventually chased out of the library by a tired janitor.

Your steps fell into sync with Tanaka’s as he walked you to your house. Unfortunately, the night would have to end early, as the Karasuno volleyball team had early morning practice the next day. But at least you could enjoy his company a little while longer before you had to part ways.

As you walked your fingers entwined with his, and you felt the same feeling of peace and security that you had the first time he’d held your hand. Nothing could feel more natural, so right, and the feeling only grew stronger when he began to rub lazy circles into your palm with his thumb.

You let out a sigh of contentment, “this is really nice.”

Tanaka sent a smile toward the stars, “you’re really nice.”

You nudged him playfully, “I’m trying to be serious here!”

The boy puffed out his chest defiantly, “I can be serious.”

“Oh really?”

You didn’t really mean it as a challenge, yet Tanaka couldn’t think of a better opportunity to grab your waist and pull you closer to face him. Everything seemed to come naturally to the boy when he was with you; words seemed to tumble from his mouth with polished ease, knowing that he was in the presence of a girl who wouldn’t judge him. Slowly, his free hand lifted your chin so that you could properly see the earnest expression that consumed his features. You gazed up at him, letting out a breath of quiet surprise at his actions. He spoke in a whisper, yet his voice seemed to resonate in your mind, leaving room for nothing else,

“I’m serious when I say I’ve fallen for you.”

You gasped in surprise at his declaration as he slowly bent his head down to capture your soft lips in a kiss. Yet this was nothing like the spontaneous kiss given to you in front of your house just days before. As you closed your eyes and began to respond to the kiss, all you could think of was how Tanaka’s lips felt against yours: chapped and inexperienced, yet absolutely heavenly. Your noses bumped as the kiss deepened, and you raised your free hand to touch his blushing cheek, lifting yourself onto your tiptoes in an awkward attempt to get as close to the boy as possible. However, you couldn’t stay like that forever, and your lips broke apart as you lost balance, stumbling back into his arms with a clumsy gasp of surprise.

You smiled into his chest and wrapped your arms around his tall frame, bringing him into a loving hug. Another sigh of contentment escaped your swollen lips as he returned the favor, leaving the two of you in a tender embrace under the light of the moon.

Your voice came out like a quiet song as you spoke into his warm chest, “I really like you, Tanaka.”

“So will you be my girlfriend?”

You looked up to Tanaka’s face, arms still holding him tightly, “of course,” you answered softly, elevating yourself onto your toes once again to kiss his cheek.

A soft rumble of laughter bubbled up from the boy’s chest.

“What’s so funny?” you asked skeptically.

“I just can’t believe my amazing luck,” he grinned, “and I can’t believe I sort of owe it to Hinata.”

“You know what this means, don’t you?”

Tanaka gave you a questioning glance.

“We owe Hinata some ice cream.”

Tanaka chuckled and pulled you closer.
