Literature Text

I got those jet pack blues
Just like Judy
The kind that make June feel like September
I’m the last one that you’ll ever remember

And I’m trying to find my peace of mind
Behind these two white highway lines
When the city goes silent
The ringing in my ears gets violent

Tooru stared up at the ceiling of the bus, taking hold of the bunk’s railing as the vehicle jostled back and forth. It was silent, other than the light breathing (and heavier snoring) of his sleeping teammates. This was the life he’d always dreamed of; being on the road, moving from place to place as a member of Japan’s national volleyball team. He’d always pictured a life of total bliss, with supportive teammates and fangirls cheering his name. So why did his chest seem to swell in pain as he lay awake?

The boy had always been able to flitter from place to place, person to person. His whole life, the only real anchor he tied himself to was his best friend, Iwaizumi. But now that they were on the same team, he was more of a floating buoy, always with Oikawa as they traveled. Yet even Iwaizumi’s constant support wasn’t enough to fill the hole in the boy’s heart. It was a feeling Oikawa was intimately familiar with at this point, the urge to pick up and go home, despite the repercussions that his actions may bring to himself or the team. The boy shifted his hand from the bunk's edge to play with the silver band on his ring finger. It was a promise to (f/n), a reminder of what they had together. They’d built a home in each other’s arms, one that couldn’t be broken by the months they were forced to share apart.

He longed for her warm smile and the gentle words that tumbled from her lips. She was a girl he’d never planned on loving. Yet here he was, laying on a bus pining for her as the driver whisked them closer to their next match, and farther from her arms.

She’s in a long black coat tonight
Waiting for me in the downpour outside
She’s singing “Baby come home” in a melody of tears
While the rhythm of the rain keeps time

And I remember ”Baby, come home,
I remember ”Baby, come home”

(F/n) walked through the crowded streets, dodging passerby and avoiding the pointed umbrellas that seemed to assault her at eye level. Despite the throngs of people, the streets were quiet, as if the world had hushed to take in the pitter patter of the rain, delicately falling onto the streets and tiled rooftops. She pushed through a worn doorframe, practically stumbling in from the street. The hall was musty, probably due to the dampness that always came with the rain of June, but she didn’t mind. Only one thing was on her mind as she stepped into her apartment, entering quietly and locking the door behind her, a flurry of tired movements and shedding raindrops.

The girl shrugged off her coat, checking the time. 10:48. If she hurried she could probably catch Tooru before he fell asleep for the night. Technically his coach had a strict Lights Out by 10:00 policy, but she knew that the boy always had trouble sleeping (especially on jostling buses). She raked tired fingers through her wet hair, practically leaving a puddle on the floor as she stepped across the room toward the phone. His number was ingrained in her mind; pressing the buttons was more of an exercise in muscle memory at this point than anything else.

Did you ever love her? Do you know?
Or did you never want to be alone?
And she was singing “Baby, come home”
I remember "Baby, come home"

“Tooru?”

Her words were full of panic, as if she’d slip away forever if she didn’t hear the boy’s familiar voice on the other end of the line. Oikawa sucked in a breath, rolling to his side and pulling the covers up over his head for more privacy in the crowded bus bunk room.

“(F/n).”

The two stayed silent for a few moments; simply knowing that they were both present over the crackling phone line was enough for them.

“I miss you so much,” she whispered, waiting for him to say something, anything to calm the aching in her chest. It had been nearly two months since they’d last been together; the only spottings available to her had been while watching his matches on television, but even those were few and far between.  A few droplets of water rolled down her cheeks, whether it was rogue rainwater or salty tears she didn’t know. All that mattered in that moment was the sound of Oikawa’s breath hitching on the other end of the line as he spoke in hushed tones.

“I miss you too. Just two more weeks, okay? Then I’ll be home.”

Tooru knew that their time apart affected her even more than it did him. At least he had the support of the team behind him; many of the men had left their sweethearts behind, just as he had. They had a mutual understanding, a thread in common that stitched them all together. Yet (f/n) had no one who understood the strain of a long-distance relationship by her side. And her job was stressful as hell in his eyes; he was in awe of her daily strength.

Yet (f/n) remained silent on the other side of the phone, sucking in a breath to hold back the tears that threatened to roll down her cheeks at any moment,

“It’s just… really hard sometimes.”

Oikawa’s hearts broke as he heard (f/n)’s voice crack.

“Shhh, it’ll be okay. Just hold on for two more weeks, you can do that, I know you can (f/n)-chan.”

The girl nodded, quietly adding a mumbled “okay” as she took another breath, trying to calm herself. But it was hard to be alone sometimes, with no one to hold you when you needed it most.

I’ve got those jet pack blues
Fight off the light tonight and just stay with me
Honey, don’t you leave

Oikawa whispered sweet nothings into the phone, hoping that (f/n) would be able to regain her composure. The swelling in his chest was becoming too much to bear.

“Let’s just talk, okay? That’ll help you calm down, alright?”

“Okay,” she murmured, “how was your day?”

Oikawa smiled. Even in her darkest moments (f/n) put others before herself.

“It was good. Iwa-chan punched me when I ate some of his lunch bento, though. So mean!”

He knew that his antics (and the subsequent pain that came from provoking Hajime) always made (f/n) chuckle; that’s half the reason he continued to irritate his best friend, after all.

“Don’t be so mean to Hajime,” the girl scolded.

“He started it!”

“No, you did!” she snickered. Oikawa smiled at the sound of her laugh.

“How was your day?”

She sighed into the phone, “long, but I think we’re going to close this business deal within the next few days, which is good.”

The boy perked up upon hearing the news, “that’s great! You’ve been working on this for months!”

(F/n) smiled coyly, despite being alone in the apartment, “I’m just happy it’ll be done soon.”

Tooru’s voice gained a mischievous edge as he rearranged the covers on his bunk, “I guess we’ll have to celebrate when I get home.”

“Yeah, I guess so,” it sounded as though (f/n) had stopped crying on the other end of the phone, “Tooru? I have to go. There’s a big morning meeting tomorrow I need to attend.”

The boy pressed the phone into his cheek, “get some sleep. You’re the best fiancé in the world, you know that?”

“Tooru, I love you so much.”

“13 days and counting, okay? I know you can do it.”

“I’ll be counting.”

(F/n) set the phone down reluctantly. 13 days. If Tooru said she could make it 13 more days then she knew she could. The season was almost over, and that meant home practices, and months back in his arms.

Miles away, Oikawa lay motionless in bed, rewinding (f/n)’s final words over and over again as he fell asleep, I love you so much.
